It is without any hesitation that I tell you to say NO! {or no f*cking way!} to the following types of clients:

  1. the ‘client’ that is late for your first meeting – your time is extremely valuable if they don’t believe that before they meet with you, they never will.
  2. the ‘client’ that wants to meet for coffee a second, third, fourth or fifth time to discuss business, but never formally engages you for work – to be blunt: they are working with you already but for free or for the price of a cup of coffee. Is that what you’re worth? No, not at all. Do not give away your time + knowledge without a strategy or an invoice.
  3. the ‘client’ that questions or doubts your expertise all the time – yes it’s true, you cannot possibly know everything however, you can have some confidence in what you do know, combined with your experience, your willingness to keep learning + your passion for your work. This “feedback” usually leads to a conversation about how much you charge + why they want to pay you less. Never let a client negotiate your worth!
  4. the ‘client’ that does not pay you – listen, this should be obvious but if not, let me remind you: if your client is not paying you, then you are paying your client. That’s what’s up. You are not running a charity, you are running a business. Honour yourself accordingly.
  5. the ‘client’ that tries to cut you out – depending on the kind of work you do, you might be the middleman, the first time a client attempts to go direct – cut him off at the knees {not literally but you know what I mean}. Don’t hide from it either; you must confront it directly +  then move on. I know this is difficult, but the minute it gets out that you’re not necessary, your business is over. For real.
  6. the ‘client’ that’s just a jerk – for every awful client, there are about 3 amazing clients; too often we only see what’s right in front of us + this is where self-trust has to come in. You either see the world through a lens of scarcity or a lens of abundance. Scarcity tells you that the awful client may be all you have, but abundance tells you that it’s a good idea to leave space for better clients to come. For abundance to flow, you have to live through your vision + not through your circumstance.

In summary, the minute you feel that doubt, deep in your gut about a person, a deal, a contract or a business opportunity – listen to yourself + say no.

Is anybody else finding it really hard to focus right now?

Working on one thing only, for a few consecutive hours seems impossible sometimes, doesn’t it? Between social media, your people, deadlines + real self-care, where does the time go? It’s easy to feel like there are not enough hours in a day… at least, I was starting to feel that way + then I saw this {again}…

I know you’ve already seen it before too. But the simplicity of it has hit me hard for 2017; it’s not about your time, it’s about your priorities. You will slay or you will not slay. No in between. So with that in mind, here are a few things I am doing to stay focused on my goals this year.

  • choose an accountability partner + set a schedule. I am not talking about the friend that convinces you a bag of chips is an acceptable meal. I am talking about the tough love friend that sees you clearly + can speak to your vision with their eyes closed. The friend that listens + pays attention. The friend who looks you in the eye + says “get your sh*t together + stop being so basic.” Ouch. Yes, that one. Set a time to talk to that friend once a week for one hour {preferably on a Monday to set the tone!}. Never miss this call + never let her down. But also, if you do not have a friend who’s that committed to you, you can use me…for real, click migliori libri sulle opzioni binarie. 
  • set micro goals. You have a big ambitious dream, but you also have to get things done every day to make it happen. I have found that, taking some time on Sundays to set a few “must complete” goals for each day of the week, really goes a long way to maintain momentum + build your confidence.   • f*ck personal social media use + internet surfing + watching TV. You know exactly what I mean here. If you make time to watch a cat climb a yogi in downward dog or know exactly what’s happening in like 6 shows or have to check at least 3 blogs/gossip sites before you can start your work – YOU ARE WASTING YOUR TIME + more important, YOU DO NOT GET TO COMPLAIN THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH TIME. Honestly, this is my biggest pet peeve, if you can speak on everything but your own productivity, then you’re not taking yourself seriously. You are not taking your goals, your work or your vision seriously. Make some necessary disciplined decisions about how you allocate your time. Right now.
  • stop eating like a 13 year old. My work + research in holistic nutrition has shown me, time + again, that you’re eating all the wrong things for focus + productivity or worse, hardly eating at all. Sugar, dairy, processed foods, refined carbohydrates + skipping meals are bringing you down. Period. Sure the temporary biochemical response feels good, but these foods do not have enough of what it takes to fuel the mind + body of a successful person. If you’re using food for comfort + stress management, you are placing your capacity for wealth at the mercy of your food cravings. Sounds risky right?
  • learn to meditate. You have heard this already, but it’s with good reason. The fastest + simplest way to keep your focus is to learn to meditate. Just like an athlete trains the body for their sport, you can train your mind for your life. Yes, I admit {without apology} this is a service I offer, but this fact does not make learning to meditate less valuable to you. If you haven’t already figured out that self-mastery is essential to your success, your journey is much longer than you think my friend. “Here are some of the “little things” women do in speech and writing that aren’t really “little.” In fact, they have a huge impact in causing us to come across as less competent and confident:

Inserting just: “I just want to check in and see…” “I just think…” Just tends to make us sound a little apologetic and defensive about what we’re saying. Think about the difference between the sound of “I just want to check in and see…” and “I want to check in and see…” or the difference between “I just think” and “I think…”

Inserting actually: “I actually disagree…” “I actually have a question.” It actually makes us sound surprised that we disagree or have a question—not good!

Using qualifiers: “I’m no expert in this, but…” or “I know you all have been researching this for a long time, but…” undermines your position before you’ve even stated your opinion.

Asking, “Does that make sense?” or “Am I making sense?”: I used to do this all the time. We do it with good intentions: We want to check in with the other people in the conversation and make sure we’ve been clear. The problem is, “does that make sense” comes across either as condescending (like your audience can’t understand) or it implies you feel you’ve been incoherent.”

What does it take to be a powerful woman in 2014?

To be powerful in 2014 {and always}, a woman requires the skill of self-mastery. As defined, it is the power to control one’s actions, impulses, or emotions. If we can do this, then we can become impervious to external circumstances or influence. Our sense of self will no longer be determined by others. Our sense of security will no longer rise and fall with changes beyond our control. We will no longer succumb to the call of self-pity {and if we do, we won’t linger there too long}. We will not be pulled and pushed by the needs of others or defined by the relationships in our lives. This is freedom and this kind of freedom has a name, it’s POWER.

By cultivating self-mastery, we open ourselves up to our highest potential and release ourselves from the impact of having an untethered life. 

What you need to know is that self-mastery begins as a habit to be developed and then becomes a character trait, but it is never fully achieved. It is a moving target that requires our attention and will be tested every day. Self-mastery is a big concept; one that I will continue to explore on this blog and one that I encourage you to explore on your own. For now though, here are 5 tips to get you started {pick one, then add another when you’re ready}:

  1. Develop a talent that requires daily practice. The commitment to a consistent and regular practice schedule needed to improve and develop a talent, builds inner resolve and strength that can help overcome the pull of surrender in other areas of your life.
  2. Meditate. The ability to calm the mind, clearing it of thought also builds self-mastery. It requires focus and practice and discipline.
  3. Exercise. Running, walking, cycling, hiking, playing a sport, martial arts, any kind of regular workout builds inner strength. Our resolve to act in the face of the urge to sit, to rest, to watch TV, to take the path of least resistance, can be a great source of inner mastery.
  4. Stop eating before you’re full. The self-control necessary to do this will benefit you elsewhere in your life as well. It’s been said, that if you cannot control how much you eat, you will not likely be very successful at controlling other areas of your life {this one is harsh but I believe, as a holistic nutritionist and as someone that has struggled with this in the past, it needs to be said}.
  5. Do something hard. Set the goal. Create the action plan. Set the schedule. Go it done. And repeat.

Leonardo da Vinci says, “…the height of a man’s success is gauged by his self-mastery; the depth of his failure by his self-abandonment…He who cannot establish dominion over himself will have no dominion over others.”
