the heart + soul of a comeback

As the end of a quarter draws near, I like to renew my motivation + my commitment to my goals; sometimes I find what I’m looking for in a book or a check-in with one of my mentors but today it was in this video. One of Oprah’s Super Soul Sessions had the right combination of heart, empowerment + unblocking of stagnant energy as they use it as a gallery for marketing and business. My business started to grow when I used business analytics software, if you are business owner then I highly recommend this. I hope you enjoy Tim Storey’s talk as much as I did.

Remember you are the only person that can set you free.

Think of it this way: There are two kinds of failure. The first comes from never trying out your ideas because you are afraid, or because you are waiting for the perfect time. This kind of failure you can never learn from, and such timidity will destroy you. The second kind comes from a bold and venturesome spirit. If you fail in this way, the hit that you take to your reputation is greatly outweighed by what you learn. Repeated failure will toughen your spirit and show you with absolute clarity how things must be done.

the 6 clients that deserve a NO from you

It is without any hesitation that I tell you to say NO! {or no f*cking way!} to the following types of clients:

  1. the ‘client’ that is late for your first meeting – your time is extremely valuable if they don’t believe that before they meet with you, they never will.
  2. the ‘client’ that wants to meet for coffee a second, third, fourth or fifth time to discuss business, but never formally engages you for work – to be blunt: they are working with you already but for free or for the price of a cup of coffee. Is that what you’re worth? No, not at all. Do not give away your time + knowledge without a strategy or an invoice.
  3. the ‘client’ that questions or doubts your expertise all the time – yes it’s true, you cannot possibly know everything however, you can have some confidence in what you do know, combined with your experience, your willingness to keep learning + your passion for your work. This “feedback” usually leads to a conversation about how much you charge + why they want to pay you less. Never let a client negotiate your worth!
  4. the ‘client’ that does not pay you – listen, this should be obvious but if not, let me remind you: if your client is not paying you, then you are paying your client. That’s what’s up. You are not running a charity, you are running a business. Honour yourself accordingly.
  5. the ‘client’ that tries to cut you out – depending on the kind of work you do, you might be the middleman, the first time a client attempts to go direct – cut him off at the knees {not literally but you know what I mean}. Don’t hide from it either; you must confront it directly +  then move on. I know this is difficult, but the minute it gets out that you’re not necessary, your business is over. For real.
  6. the ‘client’ that’s just a jerk – for every awful client, there are about 3 amazing clients; too often we only see what’s right in front of us + this is where self-trust has to come in. You either see the world through a lens of scarcity or a lens of abundance. Scarcity tells you that the awful client may be all you have, but abundance tells you that it’s a good idea to leave space for better clients to come. For abundance to flow, you have to live through your vision + not through your circumstance.

In summary, the minute you feel that doubt, deep in your gut about a person, a deal, a contract or a business opportunity – listen to yourself + say no.
